In my very first week here in Lagos, a friend of mine received a plea call for a contract as a writer, offering him non-working hours and a pay equivalent to a £1000 in Naira. This young man refused the proposition as though he was offered pork scratchings, then turned to me and said "na una dey enjoy for London", I laughed so hard I fell off my dinosaur. I am very certain what my answer would have been if I had got that call, you hardly find anyone satisfied with their present circumstance, especially when it comes to the London/Lagos idea. Some in London can't wait to get to Lagos as it is submerged with opportunities, whilst some in Lagos can't wait to get to London because of its comfort and stability. Few would realise that both opportunity and comfort respects no one and knows no boundaries.
As an artist, opportunity and comfort can be deceiving, especially when you have sown so much that reaping bad fruits is all you can see. You meet friends who took the plunge way back and you realise that your present situation is better due to the bad fruits they've reaped. My mind still shakes when I comprehend the kind of opportunities I have been offered in the last month and probably one day I'll have the guts to blog about it. As it might appear at the moment, it is less about how talented you are but more about how far you are willing to go to get what you want. Still, bad fruits are bad fruits as time always tells. If I was told few years back that there is no absolute finish line for everyone in the race of life, that our tracks and lanes are different and the only thing we have in common is drive and self belief. Would I have consented?
For instance, someone graduates at the age of 20 and struggles for another 5 years to get a job, while another might graduate at age 25 and gets a job immediately. One can marry a virgin and wait for the next decade to have the blessings of children and another lady probably after having series of abortions in her past becomes a mother almost immediately after marriage. A fellow becomes a MD at 38 and dies at 56, another becomes a MD at 55 and lives till 90. Our tracks and lanes are most definitely different.
Life is full of twists, turns, ups, downs and bounteous in surprises. Life offers each one of us different opportunities and comfort and once it is lost, its gone forever - So I was told. It's up to each one of us to patiently wait, recognise, utilise every opportunity and to discern if what we see as comfort is really comfort or just another bad fruit. We learn as we go as no one knows it all, has it better, or is situated in the perfect location, because only few are opportune to be in the position they are today. They are not experts, they just had the opportunity.
Make I go call my guy if hin fit pass the job to me, cos a thousands pounds could give me two or probably three of my next hit tracks lol.
...Please take time to listen to this track (HEART OF THE CITY- MI FT SDC) cos I think it very much relates to this issue
